INTRODUCTION

The company, a children’s audio subscription service, provides immersive audio storytelling that inspires and activates kids’ imaginations. The content includes podcasts, audiobooks, and music, all specifically geared toward kids. 

This small brand is a client of Code3’s small business division, Elevate. The brand, a paid subscription service, faced reporting challenges while rolling out their “freemium” plan in addition to their paid premium service.

Code3 segmented the reporting, allowing the company to differentiate between their services and gather accurate and streamlined data. Code3 created a single dashboard for premium and freemium data across iOS, Android, and web. With Code3’s help, the company cut their reporting time by half, identified key metrics, and was the first company in Code3’s portfolio to make the switch to the new Google Analytics tool, GA4.

 

THE CHALLENGE

This children's audio entertainment network operated with a subscription service that was strictly paid only, until the brand decided to roll out a freemium service. With the new freemium option, users had the choice to access limited content for free and with ads. However, the company's analytics had two major issues: 

  1. There was no way to separate the freemium data from the premium data.
  2. Data was reported in different places from web, android, and iOS users. 

Code3 completely restructured, revamped, and implemented a new analytics tracking framework. This includes defining new events, implementing these new events on their website, and deploying GA4. 

SOLVING THE PROBLEM OF SILOED REPORTING

Code3 used Google Tag Manager to create separate events within the freemium and premium subscriptions. First, Code3 identified different actions people took when using the services. Then, we were able to narrow down those actions into events in Google Tag Manager. This allowed for tracking of these events in GA4, and specified the users and their activity. 

Reporting the data in this manner showed that 33% of subscriptions were premium. Additionally, 28% of freemium users converted to a premium subscription. Better data meant that the company could better understand their users and market more effectively and efficiently. As a result, the company saw a 3x increase in paid premium subscriptions.

 

ONE STREAMLINED DASHBOARD

In addition to having separate reporting for freemium and premium subscription services, the company's analytics for web, iOS, and Android users was also reported separately. This made it difficult to draw conclusions from the data. Code3 created a single streamlined dashboard that would allow the company to gather insights into user behavior. This system cut reporting time in half and allowed for a more efficient workflow.

ROLLING OUT GA4

The upgrade to GA4 was an essential part of Code3’s plan to develop the company's reporting capabilities.
